Industrial Facility, Carson, California
A successful pilot test lead to a full-scale implementation of Pneumatic Fracturing and proppant injection at a former industrial facility in Carson, California. The existing SVE extraction system installed to remove extensive PCE contamination within the unsaturated soils and had reached an asymptotic mass removal. The objective of the PF application was to enhance the extraction rate by increasing the bulk permeability of the treatment zone to achieve additional mass removal.
ARS performed the fracturing in 45 boreholes between the depths of 40 ft bgs and 35 ft bgs in a sility and clayey sand formation and injected a sand propant to maintain the aperature of the created fractures in facilitation the vapor extraction of the system.
After the Pneumatic Fracturing application, twelve of the forty-five boreholes were converted into additional SVE extraction wells. Immediately after the conversion, they produced the highest VOC recovery rates of all the SVE wells at the site. One year after the PF implementation, six of the converted wells are still extracting significant quantities of PCE.
