DEN002 – Pneumatic Fracturing and Liquid Atomized Injection of Molasses, Denmark
Injection of Molasses in Glostrup, Denmark
ARS was contracted by a European consulting firm to inject molasses at a site in Glostrup, Denmark to remediate chlorinated solvents in the groundwater as part of a bio-stimulation Pilot Test.
The geology at the site consists of a “Gytje” material, which is a green/grey littoral or marine organic debris containing silicious-shelled micros and inorganic clays and silt. The objective was Pneumatically Fracture the formation before injecting 950 liters of molasses using ARS’ Liquid Atomized Injection technique via two boreholes between the depths of 1.5 meters and 4 meters bgs.
The collapsible nature of the soils at the site required the advancement of a 4-inch solid casing using a Geoprobe to the target depth. Once this was accomplished, ARS’ fracture assembly was lowered to the bottom of the boring and the casing was then retracted to expose the full assembly to the formation.
Significant pressure influence was observed in monitoring wells within the vicinity of each of the two injection points. Lateral fracture propagation in excess of 3 meters was confirmed. Molasses were seen to seep out of adjacent wells.
The consulting firm is currently monitoring the long-term effect of the molasses prior to designing a full-scale treatment. Despite the tight schedule and unfamiliar working environment, the Pilot Test was completed successfully. The work received much media coverage in Denmark. Once again, ARS has demonstrated its ability to work with international companies.
