Former Service Station - Newark NJ

Project Summary
The shale and sandstone formation of a former service station in Newark, NJ was contaminated with BTEX and TPH. A pilot test was performed utilizing Pneumatic Fracturing to increase soil permeability and to enhance vapor extraction. The field application was completed in September 1993.

Procedure
A single pneumatic fracture well was installed and fracturing was applied from 9' - 13' below the surface. Changes in air flow, vacuum influence, and hydrocarbon removal rates were monitored before and after the application of the Pneumatic Fracturing technology.

Outcome
After Pneumatic Fracturing was applied, the effective vacuum influence was observed to increase by as much as 2,900%. In addition, hydrocarbon removal rates increased by as much as 757%.
